As a passenger, you are required to pass through security before commencing your journey. Some people may experience airport security as harsh, but airport security requirements today have become far more stringent and must be adhered to without exception.

Who makes the rules and who is responsible for security?

The overall objective of all civil aviation regulation is to increase air safety. For this reason, civil aviation is subject to a large number of international (EU) and national rules.  Although the EU makes the rules and these, as a starting point, apply to everyone equally, each country has some freedom to decide how to comply with the rules and this is determined by national authorities. While airports are free to apply stricter procedures than those required under EU rules, any relaxation of the rules is not permitted.  As a result, passengers may find that security procedures vary from airport to airport.

In Norway, the Civil Aviation Authority - Norway (LT) has overall responsibility for monitoring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Currently we have approximately 700 security personnel who are responsible for all passenger and baggage security checks, as well as for general airport security. These staff are employed by the security company G4S, which is Oslo Airport Gardermoen's security sub-contractor.

You will meet some of our security personnel when you pass through security, where security officers will check both you and your hand baggage to ensure that you are not carrying any items that could pose a threat to air safety. You will meet others on your way through the terminal towards your departure gate. There are also many security personnel you will never meet. These people carry out a range of tasks around the airport in order to ensure the safety of your journey. Some, for example, are responsible for the camera surveillance of checked baggage, while others are located at cargo reception and check that all cargo entering the terminal complies with security regulations.

Do you have any questions regarding security at the Oslo Airport you may ask security inspectors at the airport, or please contact Oslo Airport's Passenger Service at tel. 06400 (if calling from Norway) or +47 915 06 400 (if calling from abroad).
